Hello guys.

This might make you all feel slightly better about your circumstances, or not. I am going bald and I have a massive egg shaped head which is being more exposed by the day seemingly. On top of that I actually seem to be thinning in the donor area right at the back. Sods law my big forehead is the first to shed. The worst place i particularly could have lost it (apart from the donor area obviously). Not being particularly vain I thought sod it i am getting old, I'll shave it. Bad idea, everyone stares at me everywhere i go. With further loss this now happens shaved or not. I always used to get some shit because of my head and the fact that I annoyingly have a pretty boy face but its getting ridiculous these days. I am not thick skinned enough to put up with all the crap. Although it would obviously be nice to feel attractive I would well settle for inconspicuous.

I have tried finest which worked really well at halting my hair loss and my sex drive so I am now on minox which is helping to an extent. Thinking of going back on finest every other day. Gonna use nizoral saw palmeto topically aswell. Definatly gonna get a transplant for the hairline as soon as I can afford it, if of course I am elligable. Really wanna sort it out cos as many of you will empathize, my life is on hold and I feel like a bit of a freak show. Is there anyone out there that can advise me please. ta very much.

There's no evidence that Saw Palmetto is effective for hair loss, though it's an ingredient in many scam products. If you can't handle the side effects caused by 1mg of finasteride, you could try cutting your pills up and taking 0.5mg a day.

Sounds like a HT is your only option, but if your donor is thinning too then you might not be a candidate  Is ALL your donor thinning or is there a strong horse-shoe of hair? I also have a big head and the shape and facial features don't suit a bald head - fortunately Dr Feller managed to get enough hair out of my limited donor supply to give me a somewhat normal look. Perhaps you should meet up with Spex and let him have a look.

It isn't fair  I went to the barbers yesterday and there was a guy in the chair next to me with the thickest hair I've ever seen. He had more hair than Elvis, perfect hairline about 1½ inches above his eyebrows and really thick shiney hair. I could see the barber tugging a comb trying to pull it through his hair. I'd estimate he had 10 times the number of hairs I have per cm2 on top of his head - bastard

My best mate has the thickest hair ever. He knows me well and often jokes "I am never gonna go bald but if I did it wouldn't matter cos I have the perfect head for a skin head". He does aswell.

Re donor area its not all thinning. The sides look fine and around the back down to the nape is ok. Its just the the main donor bit at the back of the head which actually looked like it was balding. I was on propecia then dutasteride for a couple of years and there was slight thinning then. Stopped both and started minox and the thinning at the back got worse then steadily better after 6 months. I cut my own hair but a couple of years ago my barber said that I had another crown right at the back. He said I was unique. Great. I thinks thats why the thinning.

Its not all bad news. I got in there early so despite being 30 and a family history accross the board of norwood 1,000,000 I have still got most of my hair. I think that most of this is down to propecia and dutasteride along with a plethora of unsatisfied women. Anyway am currently liasing with Dr Rahal, he seems to think based on photos he can achieve my requirements and I have heard nothing but good feedback on him.

Take it easy dude

Oh regarding pills. Do u guys think it better to do day on day off or half doses daily. I have heard of people getting long term sustained results with less side effects by taking the odd month off once or twice a year stopping the body from getting used to the meds.

Your body never "gets used" to finasteride or dutasteride. The drugs always bind with 5AR and reduce DHT production whenever you take them.

You could take a break from dutasteride after 6 months or so on the drug and it wouldn't have much effect, because the drug's half-life is so long (5 weeks) that it builds up in your bloodstream.

You can't take a break from finasteride, because the drug has a very short half-life and is essentially out of your body within a day. 5AR takes a while to regenerate but will be back up to baseline in a week or so. And as DHT levels increase, damage to your hair follicles intensifies.

Ok then. If I took finest day on day off it would effectively be benefiting my hair loss 1 day then not the other right. Or is it accumualatively benefitial with a quick drop off. By this I mean taking it every other day would have no effect whatsoever. I have tried both with really good results re hair u see but I literally forget about sex. I would say less so though with the dutas, side effects that is.

Re what you say about the short half life of fines. I would happily take 50% effectiveness for hair with the ability to still get one if u know what I mean. I might do day on day off c what happens.

Adios amigo :D

Well the recommended dose of finasteride for hair loss is 1mg every day. I know that DHT levels do take several days to recover even after a single dose, but I wouldn't go for an atypical dosing regimen because there's no evidence on how effective it would be.

I should also mention that hairlosstalk.com recommends - "Propecia should be administered at 1mg daily in pill form, with no exceptions. Many people talk about custom dosing, skipping days, doubling up, etc. This will not only do nothing to help your hair loss, but will also do your system more harm than good. Hormones are very delicate chemicals that operate in conjunction with each other Therefore a constant daily dose will ensure a stable hormonal environment, and keep your biology in harmony."

As for side effects, the only options would seem to be a lower dose, coming off the drug or using Viagra or Cialis. You're probably best off talking to a doctor about this (try Spex's GP - http://www.hairhelp.myzen.co.uk/?q=node/7)

It is odd that you experienced fewer sides from dutasteride than finasteride. Since side effects are a symptom of the hormonal changes induced by the drug, and since dutasteride is stronger than finasteride, you'd expect more of a reaction from dutasteride. This would suggest to me that your supply of Dutas may be fake. There are very few doctors willing to prescribe dutasteride for hair loss, so I take it you got your supply off the Net?

I probably will take propecia at half dose each day after reading that. What you said about the dutasteride

occured to me but although not as effective, with what appeared to be lessened side effects, I did get

significant results. However, I did buy Dutagen and they were really cheap and extraordianrily enough they

delivered them prior to any payment or even taking payment detail checks. However again, as I say, I did

get results. The possibility that I got a residual positive effect and side effects from the propecia for over a

year, I think is a slim one. I would say that the reduction in side effects was proportional to the reduction in

effectiveness of the dutagen by ranbaxy. Who knows? I will go back to the propecia because it did work well

for me and play with the dose in regualar manner and see how I get on. If not i'll just stick with minox.

Cheers for the info.
