Greetings From The Andrew

Recommended Posts

Hello bald ones, recovering bald ones and recovered bald ones!

I made it to The Andrew. Flights were on time - the only problem was that the taxi driver couldn't find the hotel and drove round in circles for ages and stopped to ask a dozen people. Eventually some guy told the driver to follow him and he lead us to the hotel. I think we need to get driving insturctions ready as it seems many guys have had problems with the taxi drivers not knowing Great Neck <_<

Oh, and there's a free WLAN network in the hotel.

Same problem with the taxi... I told him just to take me to Great Neck station.. and he still had trouble finding it. Mine told me just after we got going for about 2 miles that he was going to be charging me double! He said 'We are entering Queens now, this means the charge is going to double!' WTF! He charged me $100 (and it was a proper yellow cab) and I had to give him a tip as well.. as he said he wanted a tip. That was the 1st experience I had when I arrived. How much was yours PB?

Good to hear its free internet access B) ...whats the weather like?

As soon as the taxi driver left the taxi rank at the airport he asked how much I would pay and then turned the meter off  He also asked if I knew where Great Neck is. I said I knew where it was because I was afraid he would rip me off if he knew I was a complete tourist. Anyway, I said it "usually" costs $60 so that was the price we agreed on. He couldn't speak English properly and most of the people he asked couldn't understand him, so I had to ask. When we eventually got there I asked how much he wanted and he just said give me the $60 as agreed. I gave him an extra $20 seeing as he went to a lot of trouble to find the place, well did his best anyway, and he didn't try and rip me off. He was panicking himself as it took so long to get here. As I said I knew where it was, he was expecting me to give him instructions on how to get there. The exit for Great Neck is exit 25 but after that we need clear instructions to give taxi drivers.

It was late when I got in and I just got up - it's sunny and not too hot (cooler than at home as there was a heat wave at home when I left).

The room looks exactly like the picture BHUK posted.

There was another dodgy taxi driver at the airport that tried to get me to go with him, but I went with an official yellow cab.

Good luck mate

Yeah, I will walk to the clinic in the morning and not rely on any crappy taxis that might not turn up <_<

PB next to the historical clock in Great Neck - as you can see, blue skies and sunny but not too hot ...yet. The forecast is for hot weather tomorrow and the weekend.

I just cancelled my other hotel and have decided to stay here at The Andrew as this hotel is much better than the dumps in Manhattan AND $100 cheaper a night. Wife can easily get the train into Manhattan to go shopping. I was going to go into Manhattan on Saturday but it's probably better to stay here as I won't feel like moving luggage around on Saturday <_<

Good idea to print that map off... I was going to but forgot :( had to leave in a bit of a rush...
