MSM is one of many supplements on the market. It has a few strong advocates but there's little hard evidence, i.e. rigourous, large-scale placebo-controlled trials, to back up some of the claims made for it. Quackwatch says that there's no good reason to use it. Also have a look at the Wikipedia article.
