Bill Rassman's Baldingblog has an excellent overview of dutasteride. Anyone thinking of using the drug in preference to Propecia should read this first.

Hi Pondle...

Bigmac advised me to look at your info re meds but cant find it... I am useless on this site and manage to spend most of my time trying to find my old posts and any replies... pulling my hair out ! (that would not take too long !!) Am trying to sort out a much needed visit to Feller in the first half of 2008 but in the meantime... HELP !!!!

Anyway.. just wondered to you could advise on use of Meds.. Propecia / Proscar / Dutasteride

I am trying to post some pics but having problems... Is is worth trying any of the above.. do have some (very few) hairs infront my old plugs.. up until 2 years ago this hair helped in hiding the plugs but now its very thin :-(

Are any of the above worth trying.. along with regaine.. the gel interests me as I use gel everyday to disguise my plugs..

Even if 100 to 1 shot I would like to try but dont know what is best..

Any advice would be nice.... if I can manage to find my way back to this thread..

Cheers

Tim

Hi Bigmac ... first of all... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all the others on here..

Did the search and just spent the last couple of hours reading all the posts...

Now I am 100% confussed ? Mind you, according to my better half that is not a difficult thing to do !!

Can anyone give me a yes or no.. am thinking about just starting Dutasteride and the regaine gel.. is it worth a try ?

If so... is it better to get from Spex's Doc or from the Web... but then I have read conflicting info on where to order....

Help me pleasssssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeee :-)

Hi Tim,

Anyone dealing with male pattern hair loss should think seriously about Propecia. Propecia is the brand name for a 1mg dose of a drug called finasteride. Finasteride blocks the production of DHT, a male hormone. DHT has no essential functions in the adult body (though you need it as a growing child), and it is the major cause of male pattern hair loss. Further information about Propecia is available at www.propecia.com

Finasteride is also available in a 5mg dose called Proscar. This is used to treat prostate enlargement, a common condition in older men. Because of strange pricing by the manufacturer, Merck, it can work out cheaper for guys to get Proscar and split the 5mg tablets up into fifths. Spex's GP will prescribe you Proscar that you can cut up at home with a knife or a little pill cutter. There's no long-term benefit in taking 5mg doses compared to 1mg, so stick to the latter dose.

You should start with Propecia before you think about dutasteride. Dutasteride is in the same class of drugs as finasteride, but it's much more powerful and has a longer "half-life" (i.e. it stays in your system for much longer). Dutasteride is not yet licensed for the treatment of male pattern hair loss, and we don't have good long-term safety and effectiveness data.

Regaine is worth a shot in addition to Propecia. It's not as effective as the latter, and shouldn't be relied upon alone, but there are a couple of studies showing that Propecia and Regaine can work effectively in synergy.

hi timuk,

You should first try proscar and yes u can get it from spex doc (as i do) much cheaper than propecia.
I used dut for a year but due to the sides and the price switched to proscar, i take half a pill every other day. been thinking of using rogaine gel but not sure if its any good?

Hi Dazza,
just to let you and the guys know.... Gel arrived today... have not started using it as bloody bashed my head yesterday ,doing a good deed for my gran and fitting an extractor.. bloody thing slipped , dont want to start with an open wound on the old head..

Anyway... on first inspection I am not sure how good this will be,, the dose does not look like alot of gel.. I have my hair long at the moment and gel it back (yes... its looks stupid !!)... but sister cuts my hair and she has been away for 3 months.... wont go on...

Will start to use when I get a short hair cut cut healed !!!!
