I've been looking at hotels but after my experience at the Doss House Pennsylvania; which looks great on their website, I'm a bit wary. Can anybody recommend a reasonably priced hotel in Manhattan that has clean rooms? The Broadway Plaza looks OKish on the website (but so does the Penn). Any recommendations would be welcome. A place with breakfast would be nice too - at the Doss House Penn you have to go out onto the street to get breakfast :) unless you can catch a rat or two during the night. The first room I had at the Doss House had beds designed for dwarfs and my feet were off the end of the bed - and I'm not even tall :D

Hi PB,

I too stayed at the penn and didnt think it was too bad although we did have mice in our room :) which worked out ok as we got an upgrade  I have to agree tho it is shabby but for me it done the job especially with the upgrade.

Recommendation for you : Toward the end of my stay in NYC my mum and sister flew over for paddys day weekend to see me and the girlfriend as we had been away travelling. Anyways for those last two days we stayed at a hotel called the Hampton inn on 20th ST in the chelsea area. Lovely hotel, good location, recently refubished, nice clean modern rooms. Worth checking out.

We paid in the region of $200 per night but this was over st Patricks day weekend so i'd say prices were inflated. It was pure luxury after spending a few nights in the chelsea international hostel with lots of backpackers :D

Good luck

Tom

Thanks for the tips, Spex and Tommy - I'll check those out. We also got an upgrade and discount after the mice/rats ate our stuff that was on the floor. The upgrade room was OK but would have been pretty expensive without the discount.

Hey PB yea as spex said I also stayed in the Radisson lexington. I found it very nice with good rooms and was also clean. Wasnt to exspensive either so definately worth checking out. I also found it alot cheaper looking at package deals check out expedia they were really good and if you cant find the deal you want on the net give them a ring. When I rang they offered me a Virgin flight for an extra 20 pounds which was worth every penny.

anyway good luck mate.

Thanks quick.

I looked at the Raddison on Lexington prices yesterday and the prices were close to $300 a night (for a double room) :D

Haven't checked the others out yet.

All the hotels cost a fortune :) Looks like I'll have to stay at the doss house again  I'll get a cheap room and then go and complain every half hour until they give me an upgrade and discount. I'll take a bag of dead mice with me and take them down to reception :D

Thanks for the suggestions - the suggested hotels were either fully booked or out of my price range so I booked into the Broadway Plaza Hotel. This hotel has a lot higher customer ratings than the Penn, it seems I'm not the only one that thinks it's a dump :D I won't know until I get there though - the Penn looks like a palace on the website but it was the worst dump I've ever stayed in. I've stayed in some dumps in the UK in my time but even the worst UK dump is luxury compared to the Pennsylvania. In Scandinavia, a filthy dump like the Pennsylvania wouldn't be allowed to stay in business, it would be shut down by the health and safety authorities :)
